New business startups or entrepreneurs usually have the desire or energy to compete with other business. Some business owners allow their desire to compete to serve as their motivation to achieve their own business or company's goals. We often see some company or organisation will set certain goals that were fixed and/or already achieved by certain companies or organisation.
Managing a business is like the journey of marathon. It is not how fast you started. It is about how can you sustain to the end. Some businesses were growing very fast at the beginning due to the urge and momentum is high to escalate the business at that material time. Some businesses struggled very hard to maintain at the optimum level/size and do not intend to grow. Some businesses kept themselves at the comfort zone and not willing to take risk. So where are you in your business?
I experience that managing a business is like being in a marathon. The goal is to finish the journey and not giving up half way. Enjoying the journey is a form of energy to sustain the business. If we lost the energy of maintaining the joy, managing business will only be draining our energy.
Not only that, whether you are running swiftly or walking slowly, it doesn't matter. It is about how fun you run (or walk). What really matters is to complete the journey and with FUN! And JOY!
Throughout the journey of the business, are you enjoying the scenery of the journey? Do you pick up new and useful knowledge along the journey? Achieving business targets are merely results. Do you still remember the relationships create with your customers and clients? And even the experiences that you have experienced while resolving issues.
Sometimes we compete with other contestants and we were blinded by the nature of competition during the marathon. Did we pay attention to those who struggled along the journey? Are we creating a win-win result by achieving the end point together? Running together with the other contestants, growing together with other business owners/competitors.
Journey of building business is more to a "Fun Run" than a Marathon to me. It is about how fun you run to the endpoint without giving up and supporting the others to achieve more.
